Regardless of its temporary nature, the TikTok ban and the wave of emotions it provoked will linger in our memories. Through this platform, I forged meaningful friendships with individuals from all corners of the globe, relationships that some deemed dangerous. We are being told that our voices do not matter and to get inline. Let’s not. Let’s continue to learn from each other, and start to vote out the people seeking to silence and distance us from each other.

The diverse information we encountered not only dismantled barriers but also shattered stereotypes, offering me a fresh and enriching perspective on the world. It makes you wonder: who truly gains from the disconnection among people? Clearly, it is those in positions of power who benefit. As I observe the vibrant lives of people across different cultures, I can’t help but notice a profound sense of freedom and connection that exists among us.

If you don’t see the connection between information and freedom, let me show you.

Information builds freedom by empowering individuals and societies to make informed decisions, understand their environment, and act with greater autonomy. Here’s how:

  1. Knowledge as Power
    • Access to accurate and comprehensive information equips individuals with the tools to understand their rights, options, and opportunities.
    • Knowledge reduces dependency on others and enables people to act in their best interest.
  2. Critical Thinking and Awareness
    • Exposure to diverse perspectives and factual data fosters critical thinking, helping individuals evaluate situations and resist manipulation or misinformation.
    • Awareness of laws, policies, and global issues strengthens societal participation and accountability.
  3. Economic Empowerment
    • Information about markets, jobs, and resources enables people to improve their economic standing.
    • Financial literacy and access to data drive better decision-making for personal and community growth.
  4. Social and Political Participation
    • Informed citizens are better equipped to engage in democratic processes, advocate for change, and hold governments accountable.
    • Freedom flourishes when individuals are aware of the power they hold collectively.
  5. Reduced Inequalities
    • Access to education and knowledge bridges gaps in social and economic disparities, providing everyone with a fair chance to succeed.
    • Information dissemination promotes inclusivity and equity.
  6. Innovation and Creativity
    • Shared knowledge fuels innovation by inspiring creative solutions to complex problems.
    • Freedom expands when individuals can create, collaborate, and adapt based on new insights.
