As a black woman, it is essential to set rules when I travel solo. I have a few particular things to ensure that I have a safe and happy trip. I have been on over 20 solo trips across the United States, so you can consider these tips relevant for that.

This is obviously one perspective, but I thought it may be beneficial to share…

#1. Choose a Destination

When choosing a destination, make sure you pick a safe location. I take time to review crime reports, blog posts from the area, trip advisor info, and local news reports. Once I feel comfortable with the city I have chosen to visit, I look into information about hotels and get more surgical about choosing one to stay in. For example, I haven’t felt comfortable staying in an Air BnB while traveling, mainly because I know there are security policies at hotels. While they are not perfect, it adds a security level that staying at an Air BnB does not.

#2. Choosing a Hotel

Whenever I choose a hotel, I specifically look at the reviews on several websites, and I always read through the 1-star reviews first. If I can see that the 1-star reviews are based on things that I do not care about, then I consider that hotel in the running. I generally book through hotels.com; however, I always book through the hotel website if I want an upgraded room. Third-party websites can rarely guarantee room type, so how you book is essential. The main thing I am looking for in a hotel, in this order, is Security, Cleanliness, and Price.

#3. Pick Out Areas of Interest Early

Take time to pick out the places you want to visit, determine how you will get there, and teach yourself how to get there and back from your hotel. It can be easy to get lost in a new city, and one of the most significant security issues a solo traveler can have is looking lost.

#4. Learn the Rules and Customs of Your Destination

One of the best parts of travel is learning about different cultures; with that said, it is crucial to understand whether there is a specific etiquette needed while you visit. For example, it is prevalent to sanitize your hands on a cruise before dinner service; this was done even before COVID due to the prevalence of the Norovirus on Cruise ships.

#5. Say Yes!

Traveling solo can be scary at first. However, it is so rewarding. With every trip I take, I try to do the opposite of what I usually would regarding food and experiences. Why travel if you aren’t going to give yourself new experiences?
